 AWABI? EH?

Let us tell you about the awabi. Or the ormer as you probably know it.

A delicacy and status symbol in Asian culture and a free meal in Jersey if you know where (and when) to look for it.

In Asia, the odd-looking, delicious-tasting seafood is dried and salted and fetches hundreds of pounds per kilo. It’s most often eaten at lavish wedding ceremonies and big old banquets. Fancy right?

Meanwhile, here in Jersey, you can pluck them straight off the beach on a spring tide. Just ask your nan – she probably ate them during the occupation.

It’s a food that transcends cultures, connects East and West and unites the rich and poor. And we figured there’s something pretty magical about that.
